Why do people have a fear of masks?

It is commonly believed that a mask hides a person’s true identity. However, can a mask be a true manifestation of their nature? Does the mask reveal the essential qualities of the one who wears it? Probably, that is why people have a fear of the mask: they are afraid to look deep inside and accept themselves as they are, with their not always beautiful self.

Daria Morzyavko

Installation

People naturally strive to show themselves from a better perspective. They hide and conceal the dark and unsightly sides of themselves. By ignoring and suppressing the ugly aspects, people lose their integrity and stability, thus turning into something amorphous and disembodied.

Maria Kutuzova

Sculpture, bas-relief

Forest life is largely hidden from people. In many respects, its organisation is no less complex than a human society. For example, trees can warn one another of danger by affecting the root systems of their ‘fellows’. They take care of one another in times of sickness by transferring nutrients through their roots, sometimes despite species differences.

The project’s author strives to show that unique life of conscious trees different from that of people.

Polina Kuznetsova

Sculpture

A human being is something deep and intangible. Flesh and blood are the outer layer. The spirit is the inner layer.

By demonstrating human body by artistic means, the author calls upon the viewer to conduct his or her own anthropological study.

Polina Korshunova

Installation

Every dream is a reflection of our personality or the state we are in. That is why we sometimes have coded dreams. It can be caused by hidden thoughts or repressed fears and desires that are looking for a safe way out.

Each person’s form of encoding is different: sounds, images, numbers, or incomprehensible symbols that are more difficult to interpret. The question is the following: is the addressee capable of understanding the code? Does our inability to decode the message mean that we don’t know and don’t understand ourselves?

In her project, the author tries to understand herself by decoding her message.

Anastasia Grigorieva

Sculpture, photo series, performance, and documentation

Throughout history, people have been leaving the so-called ‘ecological footprints’ that change the environment in one way or another.

The project presents a reflection on a society that is not detached from nature but closely tied to it. Members of such a society live in harmony with nature. They are clearly aware of every action they take and they confirm all their contracts with a seal. Just as people leave their traces on the earth by cultivating and ploughing it up, they leave their imprint with the amulet seal. Such a seal is like a personal signature, a life story, a person’s identity, responsibility, and life.

Anastasia Tumanova

Sculpture

The project is based on the author’s desire to consider and accept her unique self through the prism of dark spots.
